THE SHAM AND SCAM OF PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS

"The Government has over-ruled Crawley Council, and given building permission for the largest residential development in the town's history.

"Local borough planners last year rejected the bid by Barrett Southern Counties...due to the effect it would have on the area. They were backed on appeal this year by an independent planning inspector.

"But Ruth Kelly MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, last week ruled the development should go through because of a housing shortage in the South East.

"Worth ward councillor, Claire Denman, said : 'We were not expecting this. The arguments we put forward have been pushed to one side'.

"Martin Tuthill, land director for Barratt Southern Counties, said : 'Planning was not granted at local level, but Barratt applied to the Secretary of State, as all developers are entitled to do. Planning was granted on this brownfield site, as it will provide much-needed housing for the local area'.

"Ms Kelly refused to comment when her office was contacted."

AN EXCELLENT PIECE OF JOURNALISM BY CRAWLEY NEWS (JOCELYN COOK), WHICH PERFECTLY ILLUSTRATES WHY I AM NOT OPTIMISTIC ABOUT IFIELD BROOK MEADOWS.

Comments:
I thought prices were cooling in the south?

Hardly evidence of a chronic shortage.

What people say, then, has no importance?

Government vs people is not permissible in a democracy, I believe. Well that is if the government itself considers you are living in a democracy, which is another story.

I think it's more Labour Government vs Tory Local Government vs The People.

This is a party-political feud we're caught up in here - at our expense.

And the developers are laughing all the way to the wankers (sorry, bankers)

Richard,

The last e-mails I sent you have been returned by MSN as failure to deliver.
I've sent the same message to Crawley News, and the last one to Gary Shipton. All three of them apparently have been delivered correctly, not yours. It seems you have been deleted by MSN. I'm going to send you a Yahoo message to see if they can accomodate you.

I regret the e-mail address I was using was not correct, that's why MSN stated delivery failure, but I've sent you other messages and don't seem to have got a reply from you.

Thanks Jose - I'm here. Thanks for your concern

Hang on - surely the original decision to refuse planning was taken before the Tories won the election?

I think it's just incompetence. It usually is.
